Two Simple Things Every Man Should Do for Early Detection of Prostate Cancer

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime – it’s the number one cancer among men, and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States.

Prostate cancer is a serious disease, but if detected early, it is usually treatable with a 99% five-year survival rate.

The prostate is a male reproductive organ that is about the size of a walnut. The prostate can become enlarged as men get older, though this is relatively normal and not an indication of cancer.

Here are two simple things every man should do:

  1. First, know your risk. African American men and those with family history of prostate cancer are at greater risk.
  2. Second, if you’re at greater risk or if you’re between 55-69 years of age, talk with your doctor about getting screened for prostate cancer.

When it comes to prostate health, education and understanding are the keys to better outcomes. So reach out to your doctor and start that conversation.
