Behavioral Health

Our SBIRT Program offers free early intervention and treatment services for patients at risk of developing substance use disorders.

What Is SBIRT?

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for patients at risk of developing substance use disorders. (Learn more about SBIRT VT at http://vermont.gov.)

Incorporating SBIRT into the Medical Homes here at CVMC allows our trained master’s level counselors to identify and intervene with patients using tobacco, alcohol or drugs at risky levels.

We offer onsite individual counseling sessions or for those who are already dependent users, a gentle handoff to intensive treatment options. When a referral is necessary, our SBIRT counselor will keep in contact with the patient and care provider to offer ongoing support and continuity of care.

A Need for Treatment and Services

Are You at Risk?

Health risks associated with substance misuse significantly affect the management of chronic disease (e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disease, depression, PTSD). For the years 2009 - 2012, the economic cost to society due to smoking, alcohol misuse, and illicit drug use has been estimated over $600 billion.

In Vermont

Although a small state, Vermont has reason for concern. For adults18 and older, Vermont ranks as one of the top states for per-capita use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and non-medical use of prescription drugs. At the same time, Vermonters perceive the health and safety risks inherent in alcohol or drug use as low. The estimated unmet need for treatment is high in Vermont. Vermont ranks among the top 10 states with the greatest number of people needing, but not receiving treatment for substance misuse.

Why Am I Being Screened at My Primary Care Provider’s Office?

We are asking all our patients a few questions regarding behaviors that could affect your health and wellness in order to provide the best care possible. Substance use has a direct impact on health. Your answers will become a part of your medical record, with the same protection as the rest of your medical information.

What Is Brief Treatment?

Our SBIRT program offers free individual behavioral health counseling to patients in their medical home. Our counselors work closely with your primary care provider in order to coordinate your care and support the changes you desire.

In your counseling sessions we will explore your motivations, thoughts and challenges to creating change in your use patterns. Change is difficult and we want to help support you being a healthy community member.

Take Action Today. Ask your primary care provider for more information or call us directly at 802-225-5685.
