Hospital lauded for commitment to leadership in energy efficiency

Berlin, VT Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) has chosen UVM Health Network – Central Vermont Medical Center as a 2015 ‘Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency’ for its efforts to foster the economy and protect the environment via its commitment to energy efficiency. UVM Health Network – CVMC was one of 14 organizations named as Business Leaders for 2015.

The hospital is being honored for its continued efforts to advance energy efficiency in its operations. UVM Health Network – CVMC has worked closely with Efficiency Vermont, the statewide energy efficiency utility, for the past five years to make efficiency improvements, which have resulted in a 26% reduction in total energy consumption. These efforts have cut hospital energy use by 1.6 million kilowatt-hours and over 100,000 gallons of fuel oil each year, translating to annual cost savings of $500,000.

The Northeast Business Leaders for Energy Efficiency recognition program highlights the accomplishments of organizations that are participating in energy efficiency programs across the region. UVM Health Network – CVMC was selected for recognition based on its success in:

  • Achieving energy savings through investment in cost effective measures;
  • Addressing comprehensive changes in major energy systems such as lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, medical equipment and scheduling, and spurring major reductions in electricity and fuel oil consumption;
  • Continuous improvements in energy performance through top management-level support and operational practices; and
  • Demonstrating leadership that advances energy efficiency and promotes its benefits within their communities.

“Central Vermont Medical Center has reduced energy consumption by 26%, which is unprecedented for a Vermont hospital,” said Richard Morley, CVMC Vice President of Support Services. “We have focused attention on nearly every energy-using system across our campus, prioritizing and implementing improvement opportunities in a structured and aggressive manner.”

Major projects implemented by UVM Health Network - CVMC include:

  • Upgrade of hospital lighting to more efficient technologies;
  • Engagement with IT staff to utilize power management software on computers;
  • Installation of a Templifier™ (heat recovery from chillers for summer hot water needs);
  • Optimized performance of air-handling (HVAC) systems; and
  • Action upon staff energy-savings ideas.

“CVMC has been amazingly successful in its commitment to reduce hospital energy consumption and environmental impacts,” said Tim Perrin, Senior Account Manager at Efficiency Vermont. “They have achieved dramatic cost savings through improving their patient care environment, which they can now use to further their mission of helping Vermonters. I am so pleased to see them receive this well-deserved recognition.”

“NEEP is proud to recognize UVM Health Network – CVMC for its success and commitment to energy efficiency,” said Sue Coakley, Executive Director of NEEP. “The hospital provides an excellent example of how energy efficient measures can improve a company’s bottom line, contribute to economic growth and reduce environmental impact.”

UVM Health Network – CVMC will be recognized, along with 13 other Northeast Energy Efficiency Business Leaders, at the NEEP workshops at the Omni Mt. Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire November 12-13, 2015.
