Colon Cancer

Our highly skilled staff works collaboratively to ensure that you receive the best colon cancer treatment possible, from early screening and treatment plans to rehabilitation and patient support services.

In Vermont, colon cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women. Colon cancer is cancer that forms in the tissues of the colon (the longest part of the large intestine). Most colon cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids).

Colon Cancer Screenings

Let's face it.  No one wants to have a colon cancer screening.  Some people even avoid going to see their doctor after they turn 50 because they dread being reminded about it.  However, people have the procedure because it's easy and they know it can save their lives.

A colon cancer screening can find growths, called polyps, and painlessly removes them.  If unchecked, these polyps can lead to colorectal cancer.  If you're over 50, you owe it to yourself to talk to your primary care physician about having a colon cancer screening. Colon Cancer Treatment

Every diagnosis of cancer is unique and requires a specialized treatment plan designed to provide you with the most favorable outcome possible. Treatment is determined based upon a number of factors, including the size and location of the tumor, the stage of the cancer, and results of other laboratory tests.

Surgical Services

At CVMC, our general surgeons perform colonoscopies and colorectal surgeries for cancer.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy may be recommended before or after surgery in order to eliminate any remaining cancer cells potentially surrounding the surgical area. Radiation typically begins one month after surgery in order to allow the tissue time to heal.

The National Life Cancer Treatment Center at CVMC has state-of-the-art radiation therapy technology, along with a team of highly skilled and caring professionals.
