Garden of Dreams: works by Cathy Cone

To celebrate Spring, a season of renewal and rebirth, CVMC Art Gallery is pleased to present ethereal works of Cathy Cone.

Cathy Cone is a photographer, painter printmaker and educator. Her surrealist approach to photography began in the late 1970’s with the introduction of the "Diana" camera. This led to investigation of experimental techniques towards a multidisciplinary approach to her poetic image making. Cathy received her training at Ohio University, Vermont Studio Center. She received her MFA at the Maine Media College where she served as a mentor and guest faculty. Some of her exhibitions include Sewanee: University of the South, Weisman Art Museum, University of Alabama, DeCordova Museum, Griffin Museum of Photography, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center and the Vermont Center for Photography. Her works are in the collection of IBM, Hallmark Fine Art Collections, American Express, Beekman a Thompson Hotel, New York and many private collections. Cathy with her husband, master printer Jon Cone, founded Cone Editions Press in 1980 in Port Chester, NY as a collaborative printmaking workshop. Cone Editions Press is now located in East Topsham, Vermont where Cathy is director of the Workshops and Studio.

Artist Statement: In the moment where images transform and upgrade my consciousness, photography is a guide for me to a deeper understanding on the other side of the transformations. In the “garden of dreams”, flowers are pressed and re-arranged as small visual poems. The constructions of flowers are a metaphor for the cycle of life. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of flowers and making lilacs in the backyard into perfume.
