A Celebration of Seasons
Watercolors & Oil Paintings by Susan Bull Riley
On display at the CVMC Art Gallery from January 24 - March 14, 2021
THE GALLERY at Central Vermont Medical Center is currently not open to visitors without a medical appointment. This may change as Covid cases become fewer in our area and as the vaccination becomes more available. Please call 371-4100 to inquire.
I am fortunate that the isolation forced upon me by COVID didn’t present the kind of hardship that so many people have suffered. With my studio at home, I’ve been able to keep working without interruption, pursuing paintings of the natural world around me.
The dynamics of the changing seasons - ephemeral conditions of light, color, and vegetation that only appear once a year - gets me out of bed in the morning.
Most of the paintings in this exhibit were painted during 2020. As the months passed and nature’s grand parade kept presenting fresh sources of inspiration, new paintings leapfrogged over older ones, leaving them necessarily unfinished. An exhibit such as this one at CVMC gratefully provides me the impetus to complete the year’s work, frame it up, and move it out of my crowded studio.
There are watercolors as well as oils in this exhibit; working in two mediums means I learn from the best of what each has to offer. I enjoy the change of pace between the freedoms offered by working in oils with the carefully prepared drawing and intense, quiet energy required by my watercolors, especially those of botanical subjects.
